Initial thoughts and experiences in New York.
I’ve been back in New York for about 2 weeks and a few goals I set for my trip have already been achieved. Being here has really highlighted (for me) the lack of opportunities for artists who make work that is slightly hard, different or challenging, in Australia. I thought I might be getting bitter and way too cynical, but after being here for a short amount of time, the state of the art scene? in Australia has become quite clear to me. It’s just way too small and insular. Anyway… I could go on forever about this.
Being involved with the NARS Foundation residency has been fantastic so far. I have been able to meet with several curators already and my cohort of artists are all great!
One goal was to meet art writers. So far I have met two that I know of, and this week I am mentioned very briefly in an article by Rhea Nayyar on Hyperallergic talking about the Sunset Park open studios :-)

Two and a half months to go and who knows what will happen! (if nothing else happens I consider this trip to be a success)
